Ane Ayo — Neandertal Parfum
Neandertal Parfum makes scents that smell like before. Before agriculture, before architecture, before the air was full of synthetic sweetness — before, essentially, the modern world decided what things should smell like. Ane Ayo's fragrances reach back toward something primal: earth, mineral, forest floor, the inside of a cave.
The vocabulary is almost identical to wine. Terroir — that untranslatable word for the specific character of a place expressed through what grows there — is precisely what Ayo is working with. Her raw materials are geological: raw amber, birch tar, orris root, the mineral quality of stone left in rain. Her method is archaeological, not cosmetic.
This is the conversation The Léger Guide was built for. The sensory world of great wine and the sensory world of serious perfumery overlap almost completely — both are about extracting the character of a place and a time and holding it in a liquid form. Both require a vocabulary that reaches past the obvious. Both reward the person who knows how to pay attention.
