Citizen: An American Lyric is not easy to categorise. It is poetry. It is essay. It is image. It is a documentation of the specific, cumulative experience of being Black in America — not the dramatic moments, but the daily ones, the microaggressions and absences and assumptions that land in the body before the mind has time to process them.
Rankine writes about the body as a sensory instrument — an organ that records experience, that carries history, that knows things the conscious mind has not yet articulated. This is the Léger territory: the knowledge that lives below language, in the palate, in the gut, in the specific quality of attention you bring to a glass of wine when you've learned to trust your own senses over inherited authority.
The Léger Guide is built on a particular premise: that a palate formed outside the European canon — outside the traditional structures of wine education and wine media — is not a lesser palate. It is a different one. It carries different references, different memories, different associations. It is, in the end, more interesting.
Rankine would understand this immediately. Her entire practice is about the authority of a body that has been systematically told its perceptions are wrong, or irrelevant, or too political. The conversation: about what it means to trust your own senses. About what a wine vocabulary looks like when it's built on your actual experience rather than borrowed from someone else's. About who gets to say what things taste like.
I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.
