Elisabetta Foradori — Trentino
Elisabetta Foradori did not just save Teroldego. She rebuilt the entire framework through which a grape is understood.
In the 1980s, Teroldego — a variety native to Trentino's Campo Rotaliano plain — was being grown for volume. High yields, diluted wine, a grape in the process of losing its identity. Foradori, inheriting the family estate at 19 after her father's death, made a different decision. She reduced yields dramatically, converted to biodynamic farming, and began working with clay amphorae — a form of winemaking that predates the barrel by thousands of years.
The resulting wines are unlike anything else in northern Italy. They carry weight without heaviness. They have a kind of earthy depth that the word "mineral" doesn't fully capture — more like the inside of a ceramic vessel, a warmth that comes from clay and skin contact and time.
Foradori speaks about her relationship with the vine in language that is almost maternal. The vine as a living entity with its own needs, its own seasonal rhythms, its own form of communication. Biodynamics, for her, is not a marketing position — it is the practical expression of a belief that a farm is an organism, and that the winemaker's job is to listen more than to direct.
