Filipa Pato inherited a region that didn't want to be inherited. Bairrada — cold, tannic, difficult — had spent decades trying to smooth itself into something more palatable. Filipa went the other way.
Her father is Luís Pato, one of the most celebrated names in Portuguese wine. That would be enough for most people to coast on. Instead, she built something of her own: a rigorous, personal approach to Baga, the grape that defines Bairrada and that Bairrada itself had been slowly trying to abandon.
Old-vine Baga in Filipa Pato's hands is sharp and alive — high acid, firm structure, a kind of electric freshness that makes you think of rain on granite. It is not wine made for comfort. It is wine made for conversation.
The conversation The Léger Guide wants to have with Filipa Pato is about resistance. About being a woman in a region that has historically been a men's conversation. About what it means to work with a grape that your industry considers difficult and to insist, bottle after bottle, that its difficulty is its point.
