Lynette Yiadom-Boakye — Portraits of a Mood
Lynette Yiadom-Boakye paints people who do not exist. Her subjects — always Black, always caught in moments of quiet interiority — are invented entirely: no reference photographs, no sittings, no biographical anchors. They are painted quickly, often in a single day, with the urgency of a feeling that needs to be captured before it passes.
The result is an atmosphere that is almost olfactory in its specificity. You look at a Yiadom-Boakye and you know the time of day, the quality of the light, the temperature of the room. You know something about the inner life of a person who never lived. The painting does what wine does when it is great: it creates a complete sensory world from almost nothing.
The connection between imagined memory and invented presence is the Léger frame here. A wine carries the memory of a vintage — a year's weather, a specific set of decisions, a particular expression of a place — even though no one drinking it was present for any of that. Yiadom-Boakye's portraits carry the memory of a life that was never lived.
This is the conversation: about how fiction can carry emotional truth. About what the body knows when it encounters something beautiful. About the specific quality of atmospheric mood — in paint, in wine, in music — that resists explanation and insists on being felt.
I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.
