Nubya Garcia — Diasporic, Sensory, Direct
Nubya Garcia plays the tenor saxophone with the kind of authority that takes years to arrive at and sounds, when it gets there, completely effortless. Her music — rooted in jazz, stretched by Guyanese heritage, influenced by the London scene that produced her — is technically sophisticated and emotionally direct in equal measure. It doesn't ask you to appreciate it. It asks you to feel it.
The Léger register is specific: diasporic, sensory, uncompromising about its own identity. Garcia's music does not resolve the tension between its various inheritances. It lives inside that tension and uses it as energy. Her 2020 album Source is one of the most complete statements in contemporary jazz — a record that knows exactly what it is and where it comes from, while remaining fully open to where it might go.
The improvisation/terroir parallel: both jazz improvisation and wine production are about the expression of a specific place and moment that can never be exactly repeated. A vintage is a performance. A live set is, in the wine sense, a terroir — the unique conditions of that night, that room, those musicians, that audience, expressing themselves through the music in a way that will never happen again in quite that way.
This is the conversation: about diasporic identity as a creative resource, not a problem to be resolved. About what British-Caribbean heritage sounds like when it's allowed to be itself. And about the specific quality of music — and wine — that carries cultural memory in its body.
I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.
