Rirkrit Tiravanija — Art That Feeds You
In 1992, Rirkrit Tiravanija moved into the back room of a New York gallery, set up a gas burner, and cooked Thai curry for visitors. This was the exhibition. The leftover cooking equipment, the used pots, the residual smells — these were the work.
Almost everything that has followed in Tiravanija's career has been a variation on this gesture: art as hospitality, art as shared meal, art as the experience of being in a room with other people and something that nourishes you. His work does not hang on walls. It happens at tables.
The Léger frame is exact here. Wine is not a private experience. It is a social ritual, a shared language, a medium for the kind of conversation that only happens when people are eating and drinking together. Tiravanija has spent thirty years making art that insists on this — on the relational, the communal, the irreducibly human moment of passing something across a table.
