Homegoing moves through eight generations of a Ghanaian family, alternating between Ghana and America, between the eighteenth century and the present. Each chapter is a different body, a different era, a different set of conditions — but the same family, the same soil, the same unresolved history running underneath everything.
This is, in the most precise sense, how great wine works. A bottle of aged Touriga Nacional carries the memory of its vintage — the heat of a particular summer, the decisions of a particular winemaker, the specific conditions of a hillside in the Douro. It carries this without you having been present for any of it. The memory is in the wine the way Gyasi's generational history is in her characters: inherited, embodied, there.
Yaa Gyasi's second novel, Transcendent Kingdom, is about a neuroscientist studying addiction in mice while her brother struggles with opioid dependency. It moves between Ghana and Alabama, between faith and science, between a mother's grief and a daughter's need for understanding. The prose is exact and unhurried — it trusts the reader the way a good wine trusts the drinker, offering itself without explanation.
